Choir & Electronic Music

Overview

Choral Program

For the past several years, Western’s Choral program has been taking the choral community by storm, receiving acclaim at festivals for their consistently beautiful performances that reflect diverse and challenging repertoire. Whether you’ve been singing your entire life or want to try out something new, there’s a choir for everyone at Western, no experience required!

With an emphasis on creating community and building confidence, singers in the choral program have multiple opportunities to work with internationally acclaimed clinicians throughout the year, helping to develop their skills in vocal technique, performing, and theory. In the fall, all choirs attend camp in Chestermere, Alberta, and in the spring, they participate in Choir Alberta’s Choralfest, providing them with an opportunity to hear choirs from around the province and to work with guest clinicians. The Concert Choir and Jazz Singers travel on a multi-day tour each spring, furthering their performance experience. In addition, the choral program presents Winter and Year-End Concerts at Knox United Church, a beautiful, intimate setting with an acoustic that was made for choirs.

With three choirs within the program, The Festival Chorus, for treble singers new to the choral program at Western, The Concert Choir, for all baritone singers as well as treble singers who have advanced from the Festival Chorus, and the Jazz Singers, an auditioned ensemble dedicated to the development of jazz and pop idioms, there’s a place for everyone here. All students in the choral program are enrolled in a full year 5 credit course that meets twice a week in the AM Block, before the start of regular classes, making it easy to join a choir while still being enrolled in a full daytime schedule.

Electronic Music Program

We are proud to offer this unique program to students at Western. Offered at the 10, 20, and 30 levels, all students will have an opportunity to work in a Mac based lab with attached MIDI keyboards, making use of Ableton Live 9 Suite, recognized industry wide as one of the leading DAWs for music production, while working with guest artists who are professionals in the industry. Topics covered include music production in wide variety of styles, music theory, history and appreciation. While musical experience is an asset, it is not required to take part in this program.
